We specialise in training and developing care staff who work in a variety of settings, for example:

  • Residential Homes.
  • Day Centres.
  • Service User's Home.

Our training aims to provide practical help and advice in order for care staff to carry out their job roles in a professional and confident manner.

Foundation in Food Hygiene One day course All staff working in a caring environment that prepare and serve food This course is designed to meet the needs of all staff that prepare and serve food within their role. The certificate is issued from the Royal Institute of Public Health.

  • Food poisoning and food bourne diseases
  • Purchase, storage, preparation, cooking and serving of food
  • Spoilage and preservation of food
  • Food pests
  • Personal hygiene
  • Design of food premises
  • Cleaning and disinfection

Carer's Response to Emergency Situations Training (C.R.E.S.T) Half day course All staff working in a caring environment Designed to provide carers with the knowledge and skills required to deal with emergency situations in the workplace. The course is specifically designed for those working within the community.

Course content includes :
  • Description of medical emergencies
  • Severe bleeding
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Shock
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Epileptic seizure
  • Choking and breathing difficulties
  • Falls and fractures
  • Burns and scalds
  • Poisoning
  • Electricution
Moving and Handling One day course

Maximum of 8 people
All staff working in a caring environment Training is provided by qualified Moving & Handling Instructors.

The training includes theory & practical knowledge/ skills, including the use of a hoist, sliding sheets, etc.

Course content includes :
  • Health and Safety
  • Legislation
  • Risk assessment
  • Safe practice

Competency is assessed.
Moving and Handling update One day course

Maximum of 8 people
Staff requiring an annual update of their moving & handling training Updating practical skills and knowledge of the Moving & Handling training (which must have been initially provided by 'A Matter of Fact' training).
Skills for Care Workbooks Variable All staff working in a caring environment These workbooks are devised to help a new employee progress through the induction process and to meet the skills for care requirements.

Workbooks can be tailored to include individual organisational policies and procedures.

We are able to offer various training which is tailored to meet requirements for the completion of this workbook.
Protection of Vulnerable Adults - Awareness 1½ hour course All staff working in a caring environment Course content includes:
  • signs of abuse and how to recognise them
  • legislation
  • how a carer is to respond to incidents of suspected abuse
  • available support systems
Protection of Vulnerable Adults - Intermediate 4½ hour course All supervisory staff working in a caring environment To acquire skills in assessment and investigation of vulnerable adult incidents.

Course content includes :
  • signs of abuse and how to recognise them
  • legislation and research
  • managing and responding to incidents of suspected abuse
  • available support systems
The Safe Administration of Medication 4 hour course

Maximum of 10 people
All staff working in a caring environment Course content includes:
  • Increase understanding of the safe storage & administration of medication & how adverse conditions affect effectiveness.
  • Improve knowledge base relating to all aspects of medication routine, including aspects pertaining to drug formulation, medicine groups, & law in relation to drugs & labelling of containers.
  • Increase learning & observation skills relating to labelling via practical exercises & testing within the classroom.

This training covers learning outcomes for:
  • Skills for Care knowledge set
  • NVQ Health & Social Care (Level 2) Unit HSC 221
  • Currently undergoing accreditation by the Royal College of Nursing

For senior staff :
There is also a visit to the home by the course facilitator, who will assess competency, thus enabling senior staff to carry out practical observation of medicines administration.
Communication Awareness Half day course

Maximum of 15 people
All staff working in a caring environment Course content includes:
  • Exploration of communication styles.
  • Improve self awareness, leading to improved care delivery.
Aggression & Challenging Behaviour One day course

Maximum of 15 people
All staff working in a caring environment Course content includes:
  • Recognition of body language, risk factors & assault cycle leading to challenging behaviour.
  • Reflection of self & others & own contribution to difficult situations.
  • Enable application of theory to practice to reduce risk of aggressive incidents and to increase knowledge & skills.

For Managers :
There is an “add on” for Mangers which includes sessions aimed at risk taking, learning from experience, Swiss Cheese Model of error prevention & clarifying the required work.
Effective Management One day course

Maximum of 15 people
All supervisory staff working in a caring environment Course content includes:
  • Increased understanding of leadership roles, exploration of team effectiveness & how to achieve this.
  • Review barriers to change & clarification of how change can be implemented.
  • Exploration of reflection relating to supervision/ appraisal and giving effective feedback.
  • Working with risk & identifying opportunities for progression.
  • Action planning for team & individuals.
Risk Management Half day course

Maximum of 15 people
All staff working in a caring environment Course content includes:
  • Identification of risks & hazards.
  • Increase ability to avoid, &/ or deal appropriately with identified risk.
  • Increase awareness of service user and carer involvement in managing risk.
Sexuality & the Older Person Half day course

Maximum of 15 people
All staff working in a caring environment Course content includes:
  • Clarify facts, & significance to older people.
  • Improve awareness, enabling service user’s needs to be met appropriately.
  • Identification of issues & risks in meeting service user needs.
  • Improve understanding of organisational responsibilities to service user & carer (formal/ informal)
Bereavement & Loss Half day course

Maximum of 15 people
All staff working in a caring environment Course content includes:
  • Increased awareness & understanding of the bereavement process.
  • How to help & when to seek professional advice/ help.
Anxiety & Stress Half or one day course

Maximum of 15 people
All staff working in a caring environment Course content includes:
  • Increased awareness, enabling recognition of anxiety & trigger factors.
  • Recognition of negative thinking leading to poor coping skills.
Huntingdon's Disease Half or one day course

Maximum of 15 people
All staff working in a caring environment Course content includes:
  • Increased understanding of Huntingdon’s Disease & progression.
  • Improve understanding of management, behavioural problems and improving care delivery.
Dementia Awareness 1½ hour course All staff working in a caring environment A Matter of Fact were given highly commended by the National Training Awards for this course. It is invaluable for anyone working with people who have dementia. The course gives an insight into dementia and the problems faced by individuals. It provides strategies and ways of coping with challenging behaviour.

This session covers most of the Skills for Care Dementia knowledge set and also includes:
  • Definition of dementia
  • Areas of the brain affected and associated behaviours
  • Types of dementia
  • What is it like to have dementia ?

Participants can stop upon completion of this training or can move on to a further 2 days regarding Assessment & Diagnosis of Dementia.
Assessment & Diagnosis of Dementia Two day course

Maximum of 15 people
All staff working in a caring environment that are involved in caring for and assessment of people with dementia. The course aims to :
  • Enable exploration & further develop knowledge of dementia
  • Appreciate differences/ similarities of dementia and depression
  • Increase awareness of assessment process, including cognition, behaviour & functioning.
  • Communication and challenging behaviour
Mental Health Awareness One day course

Maximum of 15 people
All unqualified staff working in a caring environment that support people with Mental Health needs Course content includes :
  • Clarification of facts & myths.
  • Improve understanding of causes, acute & chronic conditions.
  • Increase ability to recognise signs & symptoms leading to Mental Health illness.
  • Increase awareness of attitudes in self & others.
Depression in Older People One day course

Maximum of 15 people
All staff working in a caring environment with older people Course content includes :
  • Understanding causes & types of depression.
  • Recognition of signs & symptoms.
  • Understanding of factors relating to the older person & depression.
  • Understand treatment & management of depression to improve care delivery.
Schizophrenia Half day course

Maximum of 15 people
All staff working in a caring environment with people with Schizophrenia The course aims to:
  • Increase understanding of illness & ability to recognition signs & symptoms of illness.
  • Increase awareness of management of the illness and complex needs.
Supervision and Appraisal Half day course All supervisory staff working in a caring environment The course aims to:
  • Provide knowledge and guidance on supervisory practice which can be adopted and applied within your place of work.

Whether you are newly promoted or someone who has been operating as a supervisor for some time, you should find the course has provided you with the management tools which go some way in making your supervisory role a little easier.

Other Training

A Matter of Fact qualified trainers are able to design and deliver a variety of care related training and are available to discuss specific training needs with you.

All training courses are designed so that they have links with the NVQ awards and Skills for Care.

Facilities

Essex Training Centre:
The training centre is situated in Finchingfield, ten miles from Braintree in Essex. Set in beautiful English countryside, which provides the ideal environment away from noise and distractions.

The Village of Finchingfield is a two minute walk from our training centre where there is a pub and tea rooms (both are available for lunch), however light lunches may be arranged for participants if required. Facilities are also available should participants wish to bring their own lunch.

Isle of Wight Training Centre:
The training centre is situated in Sandown, Isle of Wight.

The training centre is within walking distance of a pub and cafe. Light lunches can be provided if required.

Room Hire
Room hire at 'A Matter of Fact' training centres (Essex & Isle of Wight) is available. Equipment hire, tea and coffee are included.

Cost is available upon request.

The Team

All trainers are qualified and have experience in different specialist care areas. This ensures we are able to provide the relevant expertise and experience necessary to support your learning. We are committed to high standards, ensuring that every participant is supported with their learning and development.

Our trainers include qualified Nurses (General, Learning Disabilities and Mental Health), Adult Teachers, Moving & Handling Instructors, NVQ Assessors and those qualified in NVQ Level 4 Registered Managers Award, First Aid at Work and Advanced Food Hygiene for Management.
